No spine or cover creases, covers lightly edgeworn, previous bookstore price sticker on rear cover, a few faint smudges to page edges. Extensive pencil underlining and notes from previous owner, for example "Cassandra's observations are keen, delightful and include lots of self awareness." make this a reading copy only. ; Basis for the 2003 BBC film. The first novel by this author, who was best known for '101 Dalmations', written while she lived in the United States in the 1940's. This is one of the most enchanting and unusual coming of age stories. Set in a three-quarters ruined 600-year-old castle in the English countryside, the book is the journal of seventeen-year-old Cassandra. She is teaching herself to write, and does very well indeed at "capturing the castle. " She is growing up amid poverty along with her twenty-one year old sister Rose, her smart younger brother, her stepmother model, Topaz, and her eccentric father, stymied by writer's block for many years. Cassandra candidly chronicles the changes wrought by the arrival of Simon from America, heir to the nearby manor house and their landlord, along with his brother Neil and voluble mother. The devoted and shockingly handsome Stephen (penurious castle help), a charming Vicar, and a greasy photographer from London, round out the characters. Totally engaging...you will love it.; Recommended by Sulie and Holly H. of the DES email discussion group and by J. K. Rowling. Image is actual copy on offer.
