Decorative library binding with wrap around illustration, lightly soiled, worn, and slightly fraying at bumped spine ends and corners. Front and rear hinges, repaired or reinforced by library; no loose pages. Pages slightly age yellowed; text pages clean. Many wonderful black and white line drawings illustrate this story. No dust wrapper. This title seems to be rather scarce.; Set in England during the time of the Napoleonic Wars, this is the story of sixteen-year-old Elizabeth Montgomery, daughter of a British naval captain. Elizabeth regrets she is not a boy as due to inheritance laws, when her father dies her cousin Pierre Rochambeau, is heir to the Montgomery estate and guardian to Elizabeth. Her cousin is Irish and worst of all French (!) and Elizabeth deeply resents his presence and control over her life. Some mysterious events occur and Elizabeth of course must investigate which leads to a variety of adventures. An enjoyable read for junior high age and those that enjoy Regency novels.; Image is actual copy on offer.
