Afterword by Max Arthur. One of the great deceptions of World War II took place in April 1943 when a body wearing a Royal Marines uniform was found off the coast of Fascist Spain. With him was a courier's briefcase containing documents indicating that the Allies were about to invade Europe through Greece—a gambit dubbed "Operation Mincemeat" that the Nazis swallowed whole—while the real Allied objective was Sicily. Officially shrouded in secrecy, the story became the basis for this novel published in 1950 against the wishes of the British government. The film "The Man Who Never Was" was also based on this true incident.; Dust wrapper faintly edgeworn; a very nice copy. Persephone editions have uniform grey covers and dust wrappers with lovely decorated endpapers and bookmarks unique to each title. This title has been reprinted by Persephone, this is a copy from the 1st printing in 2004.; Image is actual copy on offer.
