177 7401 DELAFIELD, E. M. (Introduction by Nicola Beauman) Diary of a Provincial Lady; containing Diary of a Provincial Lady; Provincial Lady Goes Further; Provincial Lady in America, Provincial Lady in Wartime
Softcover; Trade PB Virago Modern Classics: London; c1930-40, 2008; 529 pages Very Good-
Spine and covers creased and edgeworn. Pages yellowed, edges a bit darker (as is common with Virago editions of this period) and lightly soiled. A few interior page corners creased, but clean; none loose.; An omnibus edition of four of the Provincial Lady Diaries originally written from 1930-1940. They are witty portraits of life in a Devonshire village, in London, in the US, and finally at the beginning of World War II.;

Recommended by Holly H. of the ATS and AT email discussion list. "Diary of a Provincial Lady is my favorite book in all the world. This is the book I packed in my hospital bag when I was having a baby! It is absolutely enchanting...perfectly understated...quintessentially country English before the second world war.There is an emotional French governess, an arrogant titled neighbor, the silent husband, a procession of difficult servants, the talkative Vicar's wife, two not-quite-perfect but loveable children, and most of all, the Provincial Lady, who struggles through daily life with an overdrawn account and a much-needed sense of humor. Is there any better novel? 'Answer comes there none,' to quote the Provincial Lady." Lyn B., author of the 'I Prefer Reading' blog and member of the DE Stevenson email discussion group, says "E M Delafield’s Provincial Lady is one of my favourite literary characters." Unclipped dust wrapper with no library markings, is wrinkled and edgeworn.; In this rather scarce study of E. M. Delafield and her works, the reader discovers how the talented novelist's own life provided the fodder for the enchanting Provincial Lady series and many other highly successful volumes. (Included in this biography is Delafield's account of her time in a Belgian convent.) Like the Provincial Lady, she lived in a Devonshire village and was married with two children. 'Delafield's domineering mother was the novelist Mrs. Henry de la Pasture and her father was an Anglo-French Count. The author of this biography, Lady Violet Powell, superbly analyzes the most important Delafield novels, published over half a century ago.'; Recommended by Provincial Lady addict Holly H.of the ATS, AT, and DES email discussion groups. Within nine months his plans were crushed by the Hanoverians. With his defeat at Culloden, Prince Charles fled his homeland, hunted ruthlessly by the army of King George II. Yet the Scottish Jacobites who loved him aided Bonnie Prince Charlie at every turn of the five-month flight, hiding him, feeding him—especially Flora MacDonald, who disguised the young prince as her maid. Softcover; Trade PB Greyladies: Edinburgh; c1930, 2012; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 338 pages New
The author was the sister of John Buchan. This is the sequel to 'The Proper Place' but can be read on its own. It is the tale of daily life in the small coast town of Fife, featuring Lady Jane and her daughter Nicole.

“To you and to me this is the day of small things – Who said that? Someone in the Bible, wasn’t it? And the small things keep you going wonderfully: the kindness of friends; the fact of being needed; nice meals; books; interesting plays; the funny people in the world; the sea and the space and the wind – not very small, are they, after all?”
Old friends and new in the Borders and Fife: Nicole and her mother, Lady Jane Rutherfurd; Mrs. Heggie; Mrs. Jackson; and Barbara Burt, now Mrs. Andrew Jackson, of Rutherfurd. This edition now out of print.

Softcover; Trade PB Greyladies: Edinburgh; c1924, 2014; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 339 pages New
A lovely new book. This edition includes a Foreword by Lady Stewartby, the author's great-niece and Bad Bill's daughter, and an introduction to the Peeblesshire locations where Anna Buchan was so very much at home.; Kirsty Gilmour, 'an unattached spinster' settles into a country cottage in Tweedside and along with three children who come to stay discover that summer and autumn are all too short.' Pink sugar' is all the little pleasures that add to their way of life alongside the River Tweed. This edition now out of print.; Kirsty Gilmour ("I'm 30 but you shouldn't make me say it out loud,") makes a home for herself in the Scottish Borders and takes under her wing a gentle old aunt and three motherless children; Barbara, Specky and Bad Bill. Originally written in the 1920s,'Pink Sugar' is full of perfectly drawn characters with old-fashioned values from a vanished world; a world of kindness and good manners, of generosity and self-restraint, and yet a world where poverty, illness and bereavement are just below the surface. In this society of women with peripheral men, social life centres round afternoon tea - we could be in Cranford-on-Tweed.

This title very nicely reviewed and recommended by Lyn B., author of the 'I Prefer Reading' blog and member of the DE Stevenson email discussion group.
