Softcover; Trade PB Pegasus Books: NY; 2010; Very Good+
An unread copy received with slight edgewear and light soil marks on top edge.; "When they met at a motorcycle club in 1912, Elsie Knocker was a thirty year-old motorcycling divorcee and Mairi Chisholm was a brilliant eighteen-year old mechanic, living at home borrowing tools from her brother. Theirs was to become one of the most extraordinary stories of the First World War.

In 1914, they roared off to London 'to do their bit', and within a month they were in the thick of things in Belgium driving ambulances to distant military hospitals. Frustrated by the number of men dying of shock in the back of their vehicles, they set up their own first-aid post on the front line in the village of Pervyse, near Ypres, risking their lives working under sniper fire and heavy bombardment for months at a time." ; ''Elsie, a trained nurse and midwife, and eighteen-year-old Mairi, formed part of an ambulance corps which went out to Belgium in the early days of the war; they became the only women to work permanently within shouting distance of the front line at their first aid post in the little Belgian town of Pervyse. Working independently, outside military organisations, their experience of the war was probably unique among women.''- Tanya I. author of the '20th Century Vox' blog. Softcover; Trade PB Sourcebooks Landmark: Napierville, IL; 2004; 465 pages Very Good-
No spine creases, covers edgeworn and slightly rubbed, corners curled, pinhole in top corner. A few smudges to page edges and white back cover; interior pages clean.; 'This rollicking sequel to Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice was originally self-published in 1999 as "The Bar Sinister". In Berdoll's wild, bawdy, and utterly enjoyable novel, the Darcys begin their married life as one of the happiest, most in-love couples imaginable. Berdoll picks up the story after their wedding, but flashes back to the days after the courtship, when Elizabeth and Darcy's passion for each other grew stronger. After a spicy wedding night, the couple finds their compatibility extends far beyond their matched wits. As Elizabeth settles into her role as mistress of a large household, her sister Jane grapples with her own, less passionate marriage to Charles Bingley. Thrown in as well are an illegitimate young man who just might be Darcy's son, a vengeful serving man who plagues the Darcys and develops an unhealthy fixation on Elizabeth, and suspicions of infidelity. Austenites who enjoy the many continuations of her novels will find much to love about this wild ride of a sequel, especially Berdoll's depiction of the enduring, strong love between Elizabeth and Darcy. A very nice copy.; The author 'ingeniously re-imagines the unique and intimate relationship between two extraordinary siblings: Cassandra and Jane Austen. Here, she introduces readers to one of the most intriguing figures in literature, as seen through the eyes of the one person who knew her best. A remarkable read for Austen fans, it also includes the author's history behind the story.'; "They were beloved sisters and the best of friends. But Jane and Cassandra Austen suffered the same fate as many of the women of their era. Forced to spend their lives dependent on relatives, both financially and emotionally, the sisters spent their time together trading secrets, challenging each other's opinions, and rehearsing in myriad other ways the domestic dramas that Jane would later bring to fruition in her popular novels. For each sister suffered through painful romantic disappointments—tasting passion, knowing great love, and then losing it—while the other stood witness. Upon Jane's death, Cassandra deliberately destroyed her personal letters, thereby closing the door to the private life of the renowned novelist . . . until now. " Originally published @ $13.95. Hardcover Granta Books: London; 2007; First British Edition 274 pages Near Fine in Near Fine dust wrapper
A new book with very faint edgewear to unclipped dust wrapper.; In an effort to find out what the English really think, the author spent six months in postal code S66, 'the most typical postcode area in the country'. He saw this area on the outskirts of Rotherham 'as England in microcosm - an area which reflected most accurately the full range of the nation's inhabitants, its most typical mix of urban and rural, old and young, married and single.' He immersed 'himself in this typical English Everytown, in order to get to know the mind of a people' and gives us a fascinating view of what he found.; 'What do the English think? Every country has a dominant set of beliefs and attitudes concerning everything from how to live a good life, how we should organize society, and the roles of the sexes. Baggini's account of the English is both a portrait of its people and a personal story about being an alien in your own land.' Published @ £14.99. Cover matches sample image.

30 5366 BAGNOLD] SEBBA, Anne Enid Bagnold
Hardcover Taplinger Publishing Company: NY; 1987; First US Edition Very Good+ in Very Good dust wrapper
B&W Photographs; 317 pages; Bumped spine ends and a few smudges to page edges. A nice copy. Unclipped dust wrapper is lightly edgeworn and slightly yellowed with a few short closed tears and faint soil.; An interesting biography of the author of "National Velvet" and "Chalk Garden" amongst others. It gives more insight into her life and explains some events that Bagnold glosses over in her memoir. Bagnold's family authorized this biography allowing Sebba to use journals, unpublished notes, and several other sources so it is not just a repetition of Bagnold's autobiography.; If you have both, we suggest reading the memoir first and then this biography. For Angela Thirkell admirers this biography states that in North End House in Rottingdean (one of the homes discussed in AT's memoir 'Three Houses'), "There was, and still is, a painting by Burne-Jones in the corner of a bedroom to amuse children made to stand there."

B&W Photographs; 478 pages; A lovely copy. Spine head faintly bumped, page edges pale yellow. Unclipped dust wrapper faintly creased at top edge.; The author draws heavily on unpublished works for this 'first major biography of one of the most provocative, prolific, and influential figures in British-American literary history. In her poetry, fiction, essays, and public statements, Laura Riding, the author of twenty-three books, tackled feminism, communism, sexuality, Freud, language and belief, and the coming-of-age of the American dream. In her personal relationships she was often at the center of a circle of friends and artists whose activities she inspired and sometimes controlled. Her extraordinary range of associates included writers as diverse as Hart Crane, Gertrude Stein, Edmund Wilson, Malcolm Cowley, Allen Tate, and Robert Penn Warren. During a long and "scandalous" affair with Robert Graves, she watched over his most productive period and guided much of his best work. Together they launched the New Criticism.'

Faintly edgeworn and rubbed; a lovely copy.; Translated from the French by Alison Anderson. Wonderfully written story told from the viewpoint of two residents of an upscale building in Paris. Renée, 54, "outwardly conforms to every stereotype of the concierge: fat, cantankerous, addicted to television. Yet, unbeknownst to her employers, Renée is a cultured autodidact who adores art, philosophy, music, and Japanese culture. Paloma is a twelve-year-old genius. A talented and startlingly lucid child who has decided to end her life on the sixteenth of June, her thirteenth birthday. Until then she will continue behaving as everyone expects her to behave: a mediocre pre-teen high on adolescent subculture, a good but not an outstanding student, an obedient if obstinate daughter.

Paloma and Renée hide both their true talents and their finest qualities from a world they suspect cannot or will not appreciate them. They discover they are kindred souls when a wealthy Japanese man named Ozu arrives in the building. Only he is able to gain Paloma's trust and to see through Renée's timeworn disguise to the secret that haunts her. This is a moving, funny, triumphant novel."; Occasionally we read 'non-Anglophile' books. :o) We enjoyed this beautifully written novel very much. (We also enjoyed the film.)
