Spine faintly creased, spine ends and corners lightly bumped. Dust wrapper faintly edgeworn; a nice copy. Persephone editions have uniform grey covers and dust wrappers with lovely decorated endpapers and bookmarks unique to each title.; There is an afterword by David Conville in this edition. He knew the home and several of the people that this novel is based on. "Saunby Priory, a large house somewhere in England which has seen better times is the setting for this novel. We are shown the two Marwood girls, who are nearly grown-up, their father, the widower Major Marwood, and their aunt; then, as soon as their lives have been described, the Major proposes marriage to a woman much younger than himself - and many changes begin." Whipple's focus on characters and relationships is evident in this novel. ; 'Any novel by Dorothy Whipple is guaranteed to be an absorbing story of family relationships, romance & heartache... Dorothy Whipple is one of my favourite authors'.- Lyn B., author of the 'I Prefer Reading' blog and member of the DE Stevenson email discussion group. Image is actual copy on offer.
