1 7163 SCARLETT, Susan [Noel Streatfeild] Babbacombe's
Softcover Greyladies: Edinburgh; c1941, 2014; As New
A lovely book with faint edgewear; looks unread.; Her children's books are well known and loved but this author also wrote a dozen 'light romance' novels under the pseudonym Susan Scarlett. This heart-warming romance was originally published in 1941.

Into the heart of the Carson family, close, hard-working and happy, comes their disruptive and selfish cousin Dulcie, with her decidedly cheap values. George and Janet try to make her welcome and treat her as one of their own; they find her work in Babbacombe’s department store where eldest daughter Beth is just beginning her first job in Gowns, but they struggle to make allowances for her outrageous behaviour. For it is Dulcie who takes pleasure in humiliating young Girda at her school concert; it is Dulcie who jealously tries to blight the blossoming romance between Beth and the new man in Cooked Meats, David Babbacombe himself. But then it is not Dulcie, who doesn’t understand kindness and love, who lives happily ever after.; Image is one of actual copies on offer.

An unread copy received with faint edgewear and rubbing. This edition now out of print.; Her children's books are well known and loved but this author also wrote a dozen 'light romance' novels under the pseudonym Susan Scarlett.

'When four year old Paul, already somewhat pampered and spoilt, is chosen for a part in a film his unexpected good fortune triggers major family ructions. It takes all matriarch Emma Tring’s subtle diplomacy not just to avoid discord but to bring her unsettled family closer together. A theatrical theme spiced with family in-fighting, difficult children, a wiser older woman: this is what this author does best.

Noel Streatfeild spent some time in Hollywood researching the film background for her children’s novel "The Painted Garden", research which also ensures an utterly believable background for the Rose of England film studios' in this book.; Preface for this edition by Joy Wooton, member of the DES email discussion group. 4 7286 SCARLETT, Susan [Noel Streatfeild] Ten Way Street
Softcover; Trade PB Greyladies: Edinburgh; c1940, 2012; Near Fine
A lovely copy with faint edgewear. This edition now out of print.; Her children's books are well known and loved but this author also wrote a dozen 'light romance' novels under the pseudonym Susan Scarlett. This one was originally published in 1940. 'Newly qualified as a governess, orphan Beverley Shaw’s first job takes her to the household of a famous but difficult actress and her three highly-strung children. With her pointed chin, flaming red hair and plenty of spirit, Beverley proves equal to the challenge as she attempts to bring stability and affection to the troubled children. But when her employer thinks Beverley has set her cap at one of her own admirers, matters reach a crisis.

After her own ten year acting career, and her subsequent disillusionment with the profession, Noel Streatfeild thoroughly understood the theatre, and here paints a convincing picture of its characters in and out of the spotlight.' Recommended.; Image is actual copy on offer.
