6466 MITFORD, Nancy Blessing, The Hardcover Hamish Hamilton: London; 1951; First British Edition Very Good Spine ends and top corners lightly bumped, vertical spine crease does not damage binding, front board flared. Previous owner bookplate on front pastedown, page edges lightly yellowed and smudged; interior pages clean. Only spine, front panel, and front flap of edgeworn and torn dust wrapper present.; In this charming 1951 novel, Grace Allingham tries to understand the behavior of Charles-Edouard, her wealthy and dashing French husband. Her newly acquired aristocratic world isn't quite as blissful as she thought it would be, as she contends with former and current mistresses. There is the possibility of divorce and the possibility of Grace infatuated or in love with others. This is a very funny, ever-so-satiric novel. Our anglophile fans will enjoy the rising triumph of a young Englishwoman conquering the French. Basis for the 1959 film "Count Your Blessings" starring Deborah Kerr and Rossano Brazzi. Price:

6549 MITFORD, Nancy Christmas Pudding Hardcover Hamish Hamilton: London; c1932,1975; First Edition Thus Very Good+ in Very Good dust wrapper Spine ends faintly bumped, a few faint smudges to page edges. Price clipped dust wrapper faintly edgeworn, white rear panel has a few tiny spots. Protective plastic covering dw taped to book by previous owner. A nice copy of a fun book.; This is a charming, slightly satiric tale set in the bucolic grounds of Compton Bobbin in the Cotswolds, in the time of the Bright Young Things. Paul Fotheringay wants to write a biography of the Bobbin ancestress, a Victorian poetess. Bobby, an Etonian, and Amabelle Fortesque (a blazing success at applying personal charm to get ahead in life) devise a plan to present Paul as Bobby's tutor. He is distracted by the bored-to-death elder daughter of the house, Philadelphia. Sixteen characters are assembled to amuse the writer and the reader. Devotees of Angela Thirkell will recognize that Mitford apparently shares the same dread of the holiday season. Lady Bobbin's organization of the day itself eradicates any possible Christmas goodwill. Price:

6158 MITFORD, Nancy Love in a Cold Climate Hardcover Random House: NY; 1949; First US Edition Very Good in Very Good- dust wrapper Spine ends and corners bumped, edges worn (not to boards), book very slightly cocked. Pages pale brown, edges darker; interior pages clean. Clipped dust wrapper is edgeworn with a few tiny chips and closed tears, has a soiled and age browned white rear panel. Fun dw illustration by Paul Galdone.; 'Love in a Cold Climate' is the sequel to, and has the same narrator as 'The Pursuit of Love'. Fanny's tale turns to Polly Hampton, the outstandingly beautiful, wealthy daughter of Lady Montdore, Lady Montdore's devoted attendant, Boy Dougdale--the Lecherous Lecturer, and the Canadian cousin of the Montdore's, Cedric. It is a tale of sly poking fun, charm, and absorption. Polly is a contemporary of Fanny and Linda's, with even fewer choices to pursue in the game of love and marriage. Like 'The Pursuit of Love', this novel is robust in the amazing supporting cast, with the charmingly eccentric Uncle Davey at the forefront. The basis for two television mini-series.; Recommended by Holly H. of the ATS, and AT email discussion list and by several others. Price:
