1 5966 SMITH, Dodie I Capture the Castle
Hardcover MDS Books: London; c1948, 2004; Illustrated by Ruth Steed; B&W Illustrations: Very Good+ in Very Good dust wrapper
A "Children's Golden Library" edition; dw and pictorial front cover illustration is a still from the 2003 BBC film. Large ink address stamp of a British primary school upside down on front free endpaper. Spine ends and a place on bottom edge bumped, page edges light yellow; interior pages clean, no binding problems. A nice copy. Dust wrapper, rubbed and lightly edgeworn, has two tiny holes near spine, one short closed tear and tiny original price on back cover inked out.; The first novel by this author, who is best known for '101 Dalmations', written while she lived in the United States in the 1940's. This is one of the most enchanting and unusual coming of age stories. Set in a three-quarters ruined 600-year-old castle in the English countryside, the book is the journal of seventeen-year-old Cassandra. She is teaching herself to write, and does very well indeed at "capturing the castle. " She is growing up amid poverty along with her twenty-one year old sister Rose, her smart younger brother, her stepmother model, Topaz, and her eccentric father, stymied by writer's block for many years. Cassandra candidly chronicles the changes wrought by the arrival of Simon from America, heir to the nearby manor house and their landlord, along with his brother Neil and voluble mother. The devoted and shockingly handsome Stephen (penurious castle help), a charming Vicar, and a greasy photographer from London, round out the characters. Totally engaging...you will love it.; Recommended by Sulie and Holly H. of the DES email discussion group and by J. K. Rowling.
