7191 NICHOLS, Beverley Gift of a Home, The Hardcover Dodd, Mead & Co: NY; 1973; First US Edition Illustrated by William McLaren; B&W Illustrations: Very Good+ in Very Good+ dust wrapper Spine ends faintly bumped and faded, one top corner faintly bumped. Pages faintly age browned but clean. Unclipped dust wrapper has very lightly sunned spine and faint edgewear. A very nice copy indeed. ; This is a condensed version of the Merry Hall trilogy containing "Merry Hall", Laughter on the Stairs" and "Sunlight on the Lawn". They are Nichols' hilarious (but catty and often insulting to women) accounts of his tribulations in refurbishing a gracious, but run-down, Georgian house and garden. "In the best tradition of P.G. Wodehouse and E.F. Benson, the author transforms the large and small happenings of a sleepy British village and country estate into mock high drama. Whether one is most interested in gardens, chandeliers, ghosts, cats, or bird song," his books are packed with endlessly quotable observations. As works of 'fictional' nonfiction, these are among the author's finest -and funniest - books.; This author recommended by Alison H. of the DES email discussion group, Kristi J. of the ATS, AT and DES email discussion groups and Patricia R. of the ATS and AT email discussion group. This first title in this omnibus is recommended and reviewed by Claire author of 'The Captive Reader' blog.Image is actual copy on offer. Price:
