Pre-Raphaelites At Home, TODD, Pamela
60 5018 TODD, Pamela Pre-Raphaelites At Home
Hardcover Watson- Guptill Publishing: NY; 2001; First US Edition 4to 11" - 13" tall; 192 pages Color Illustrations: Near Fine in Very Good+ dust wrapper
A new book with faint edgewear to dust wrapper. ; The semi-secret Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood was a fiery group of young artists, designers and thinkers, led by the charismatic figure of Dante Gabriel Rossetti. This book 'explores their personalities and work through the places and haunts they made their own, presenting an intimate view of an important section of the avant-garde artistic community and placing it firmly in its Victorian context. "Pre-Raphaelites at Home" is a book about personality and place. Biographies of each of the extensive cast of characters open the book, followed by a chronology of the significant events affecting the group over more than 60 years. In the succeeding chapters Rossetti, John Everett Millais, William Holman Hunt and Thomas Woolner are joined by William Morris, Edward Burne-Jones and their intimate circle. Place by place, we are led through the story of subtly shifting allegiance, of love and deaths, adultery and illness, as the angry young men became successful, and, in some cases, even respectable. The lively narrative, packed with quotation from their own work, is lavishly illustrated with full colour reproductions of Pre-Raphaelite paintings and portraits, photographs of interiors, furnishings and textile designs, and black and white contemporary photographs of the artists, their homes and their studios, as well as line drawings, sketches and cartoons from Punch and material from the Illustrated London News. Recommended.; A picture of AT as a child that we have not seen previously is included in this book. Published @ $40.00.

62 3835 WEINTRAUB, Stanley Edward the Caresser : The Playboy Prince Who Became Edward VII
Hardcover Free Press: NY; 2001; First US Edition Very Good+ in Very Good+ dust wrapper
429 pages; A new book with a bumped spine foot and bottom corners. Dust wrapper is faintly rubbed and edgeworn.; ' In each of the past three centuries, a Prince of Wales has waited most of his life to become King. Each one disappointed his reigning parent, had an unhappy marriage, and conducted scandalous affairs. But only one gave his name to an age: the future Edward VII, Albert Edward, eldest son of Queen Victoria.

Drawing on previously unavailable, little-used or unknown diaries, letters, memoirs, and reportage from both sides of the Atlantic the author depicts the Prince and his worlds: his frustrating childhood, his introductions to gentlemanly sins at Oxford and Cambridge, his chilly marriage, and his constant escapes to balls, races, spas, and country houses, where he gambled, gourmandized, caroused, and whored. His string of "god-children" included some almost certainly his own. Yet despite, or because of, his flaws, "Bertie" was loved wherever he went. He was a natural diplomat, able to charm strangers and dance all night. When he toured the United States in 1860, he was a media sensation, and there was even talk of a marriage with President Buchanan's niece. His story is a picture of tragedy and farce—qualities that fit Edward perfectly for the role of modern monarch.'; Published @$30.00

64 2130 WINCHESTER, Simon Professor and the Madman : A Tale of Murder, Insanity, and the Making of the Oxford English Dictionary
Hardcover Harpercollins: New York; 1998; Fourth Printing 242 pages Near Fine in Very Good+ dust wrapper
Spine ends lightly bumped, one faint smudge to text block edge. Dust wrapper, not price clipped, faintly edgeworn. A very nice copy.; 'The creation of the Oxford English Dictionary began in 1857, took seventy years to complete, drew from tens of thousands of brilliant minds, and organized the sprawling language into 414,825 precise definitions. But hidden within the rituals of its creation is a fascinating and mysterious story - a story of two remarkable men whose strange twenty-year relationship lies at the core of this historic undertaking. Professor James Murray, an astonishingly learned former schoolmaster and bank clerk, was the distinguished editor of the OED project. Dr. William Chester Minor, an American surgeon from New Haven, Connecticut, who had served in the Civil War, was one of thousands of contributors who submitted illustrative quotations of words to be used in the dictionary. But Minor was no ordinary contributor. He was remarkably prolific, sending thousands of neat, handwritten quotations from his home in the small village of Crowthorne, fifty miles from Oxford. On numerous occasions Murray invited Minor to visit Oxford and celebrate his work, but Murray's offer was regularly - and mysteriously - refused. Thus the two men, for two decades, maintained a close relationship only through correspondence. Finally, in 1896, after Minor had sent nearly ten thousand definitions to the dictionary but had still never traveled from his home, a puzzled Murray set out to visit him. It was then that Murray finally learned the truth about Minor - that, in addition to being a masterful wordsmith, Minor was also a murderer, clinically insane - and locked up in Broadmoor, England's harshest asylum for criminal lunatics.'; Published @ $22.00.
