Pre-Raphaelites At Home, TODD, Pamela
48 5018 TODD, Pamela Pre-Raphaelites At Home
Hardcover Watson- Guptill Publishing: NY; 2001; First US Edition 4to 11" - 13" tall; 192 pages Color Illustrations: Near Fine in Very Good+ dust wrapper
A new book with faint edgewear to dust wrapper. ; The semi-secret Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood was a fiery group of young artists, designers and thinkers, led by the charismatic figure of Dante Gabriel Rossetti. This book 'explores their personalities and work through the places and haunts they made their own, presenting an intimate view of an important section of the avant-garde artistic community and placing it firmly in its Victorian context. "Pre-Raphaelites at Home" is a book about personality and place. Biographies of each of the extensive cast of characters open the book, followed by a chronology of the significant events affecting the group over more than 60 years. In the succeeding chapters Rossetti, John Everett Millais, William Holman Hunt and Thomas Woolner are joined by William Morris, Edward Burne-Jones and their intimate circle. Place by place, we are led through the story of subtly shifting allegiance, of love and deaths, adultery and illness, as the angry young men became successful, and, in some cases, even respectable. The lively narrative, packed with quotation from their own work, is lavishly illustrated with full colour reproductions of Pre-Raphaelite paintings and portraits, photographs of interiors, furnishings and textile designs, and black and white contemporary photographs of the artists, their homes and their studios, as well as line drawings, sketches and cartoons from Punch and material from the Illustrated London News. Recommended.; A picture of AT as a child that we have not seen previously is included in this book. Published @ $40.00.

The Warden, Barchester Towers, Doctor Thorne [3 Volume Boxed Set], TROLLOPE, Anthony
49 7055 TROLLOPE, Anthony The Warden, Barchester Towers, Doctor Thorne [3 Volume Boxed Set]
Hardcover Folio Society: London; 2002; Fourth Printing 172,476,524 pages Illustrated by Alexy Pendle; B&W Illustrations: Very Good+
Quarter cloth bindings with decorated paper covered boards and decorated endpapers. Two of the lovely volumes are near fine. The very good 'Barchester Towers' volume has circular dampstains on front and a few white spots on back. No dust wrappers as issued, blue slipcase, faintly dusty, has bumped corners.; The first three volumes of "The Barsetshire Novels", the first serial fiction in English literature. The six novel series tells the story of the professional and landed classes in the Victorian cathedral town of Barchester and the surrounding county. Angela Thirkell readers will recognize many of the family names and place names as she 'borrowed' Trollope's Barsetshire for her own novels of 20th century English life. 'The Warden' introduction by Owen Chadwick, 'Barchester Towers' introduction by Ruth Rendell, 'Doctor Thorne' introduction by P.D. James.; Recommended by Holly H. of the ATS and the Angela Thirkell email discussion group:'Contemporary reviewers describe "Barchester Towers" as a comic masterpiece, centering on the burning question of who will rule the diocese of Barchester. They are absolutely correct. In this novel, second in the famous Barsetshire series, Trollope introduces one of the most detestable characters in all of literature, Mrs. Proudie, and one of the slimiest, Mr. Slope. There is the dear eccentric and mild Mr. Harding, his highly marriageable daughter Eleanor, and perhaps my favorite, the Archdeacon Grantly, the spiritual opposer to the Proudie-Slope contingent and a stubborn, comic, and still admirable character. This is a classic and must reading.' This three volume set will incur extra shipping charges if sent outside the US. Images are actual copies on offer.
