26 4065 GREENE, Graham Sort of Life, A
Hardcover Simon & Schuster: NY; 1971; First US Edition 220 pages Very Good in Very Good- dust wrapper
Spine ends bumped, page edges lightly yellowed with a few soil marks; interior pages clean and bright, no binding problems. White dust wrapper, now yellowed, has price in lower front flap corner, top corner of flap neatly clipped, edgewear and rubbing, laminate beginning to peel at spine ends. ; The author tells of his childhood and early life up until the years after the acceptance of his first novel. This time included growing up in an intellectual Edwardian family, his education at Oxford, his involvement with the Secret Service, and his apprenticeship as a journalist. ; ' "A Sort of Life" takes him through Oxford, the early years of marriage and his conversion to Catholicism, to the point where he recklessly gives up his first Fleet Street job as a sub-editor on The Times in order to write full-time. But what marked Greene out above all else was his utter determination to pursue his craft. There can be no more fascinating or illuminating account of what it takes to become a writer.'

This author 'can transform the bleakest moment with his warmth and wit. This is an extraordinarily funny account of a marriage based on love and on an exceptional sense of humour.'

'In 1971 Deric Longden's wife Diana fell ill with the mysterious disorder known as ME (myalgic encephalomyelitis), known in the US as Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. She was unable to move without a wheelchair, and was in almost constant pain. Equally distressing, perhaps, was the fact that every doctor she saw was unable to diagnose what was wrong with her. Deric, devoting more and more time to looking after Diana, watched his business gradually fail, and had to neglect his developing career as a broadcaster. He became househusband, nurse and caretaker of the woman he loved.'; All of this author's books are highly recommended and we don't know why they aren't published in the US. This title seems to have gone out of print.

Dewey: The Small-Town Library Cat Who Touched the World, MYRON, Vicki and Bret Witter
40 6504 MYRON, Vicki and Bret Witter Dewey: The Small-Town Library Cat Who Touched the World
Hardcover Grand Central Publishing: NY; 2008; Seventh Printing 288 pages B&W Photographs: Very Good+ in Near Fine dust wrapper
Spine tail lightly bumped, top rear corner not completely covered by paper, revealing board (a publishering flaw). Unclipped dust wrapper in lovely condition. A very nice copy indeed. ; "How much of an impact can an animal have? How many lives can one cat touch? How is it possible for an abandoned kitten to transform a small library, save a classic American town, and eventually become famous around the world? You can't even begin to answer those questions until you read the charming story of Dewey Readmore Books, the beloved library cat of Spencer, Iowa.

Dewey's story starts in the worst possible way. Only a few weeks old, on the coldest night of the year, he was stuffed into the returned book slot at the Spencer Public Library. He was found the next morning by library director, Vicki Myron, a single mother. Dewey won her heart, and the hearts of the staff, by pulling himself up and hobbling on frostbitten feet to nudge each of them in a gesture of thanks and love. For the next nineteen years, he never stopped charming the people of Spencer with his enthusiasm, warmth, humility, (for a cat) and, above all, his sixth sense about who needed him most."

Hardcover; Ex-Library Riverhead Books: NY; 2003; First US Edition 275 pages Very Good in Very Good+ dust wrapper

Unclipped dust wrapper, faintly edgeworn, has no library markings.; The author's life changed after the publication of her first memoir, 'Are You Somebody?' This memoir "begins her story from the moment her life began to change in all manner of ways-subtle, radical, predictable, and unforeseen. It is a provocative meditation on the 'crucible of middle age'-a time of life that forges the shape of the years to come, that clarifies and solidifies one's relationships to friends and lovers (past and present), family and self. It is also a story of good fortune chasing out bad-of an accidental harvest of happiness.

'Almost There', like its predecessor, is a crystalline reflection of a singular character, utterly engaged in life. Intelligent, thoughtful, hilarious, fierce, moving, generous, and most of all, full of surprises."
