Softcover; Mass Market PB Tor: New York; c1908,1995; Very Good
307 pages; Light spine and cover creases, a bit of edgewear and rubbing, pages clean and bright. Odd cover illustration but a nice copy. ; The first book in the series. 'As soon as Anne Shirley arrived at the snug, white farmhouse called Green Gables, she knew she wanted to stay forever... but would the Cuthberts send her back to the orphanage? Anne knows she's not what they expected -- a skinny girl with decidedly red hair and a temper to match. If only she could convince them to let her stay, she'd try very hard not to keep rushing headlong into scrapes or blurt out the very first thing she had to say. Anne was not like anybody else, everyone at Green Gables agreed; she was special -- a girl with an enormous imagination. This orphan girl dreamed of the day when she could call herself Anne of Green Gables. 'Highly recommended.

Softcover; Trade PB St Martin's Griffin: NY; c1948, 1998; 343 pages B&W Illustrations: Very Good+
A nice copy. No spine or cover creases, covers lightly edgeworn, a few faint smudges to page edges. This edition has a short list of discussion questions and a very short biography of the author. ; Basis for the BBC film released in 2003. The first novel by this author, who was best known for '101 Dalmations', written while she lived in the United States in the 1940's. This is one of the most enchanting and unusual coming of age stories. Set in a three-quarters ruined 600-year-old castle in the English countryside, the book is the journal of seventeen-year-old Cassandra. She is teaching herself to write, and does very well indeed at "capturing the castle. " She is growing up amid poverty along with her twenty-one year old sister Rose, her smart younger brother, her stepmother model, Topaz, and her eccentric father, stymied by writer's block for many years. Cassandra candidly chronicles the changes wrought by the arrival of Simon from America, heir to the nearby manor house and their landlord, along with his brother Neil and voluble mother. The devoted and shockingly handsome Stephen (penurious castle help), a charming Vicar, and a greasy photographer from London, round out the characters. Totally engaging...you will love it.; Recommended by Sulie and Holly H. of the DES email discussion group and by J. K. Rowling. Book matches sample image.
