Proud, grateful, and longing to be American, the Jews of the Sitka District have created their own little world in the Alaskan panhandle, a vibrant, gritty, soulful, and complex frontier city that moves to the music of Yiddish. For sixty years they have been left alone, neglected and half-forgotten in a backwater of history. Now the District is set to revert to Alaskan control, and their dream is coming to an end: once again the tides of history threaten to sweep them up and carry them off into the unknown.

But homicide detective Meyer Landsman of the District Police has enough problems without worrying about the upcoming Reversion. His life is a shambles, his marriage a wreck, his career a disaster. He and his half-Tlingit partner, Berko Shemets, can't catch a break in any of their outstanding cases. Landsman's new supervisor is the love of his life—and also his worst nightmare.

At once a gripping whodunit, a love story, an homage to 1940s noir, and an exploration of the mysteries of exile and redemption..." The film rights to this novel have been purchased and there has been talk that the Coen brothers are attached to it.; Dust wrapper matches sample image.

Hardcover Bloomsbury: NY; 2004; Reprint; Fourth Printing 782 pages Illustrated by Portia Rosenberg; B&W Illustrations: Very Good in Very Good dust wrapper
Spine ends bumped, paper covered boards have tiny tear at bottom edge, two corners bumped, black remainder mark; no binding problems, book looks unread. Unclipped dust wrapper has light edgewear and a tiny closed tear. This oversized book will not fit safely in an international global mailing envelope.; 'Set in England during the early 1800's--a country beleaguered by the long war with Napoleon--it is discovered that one practicing magician still remains. The reclusive magician, Mr. Norrell, is challenged to demonstrate his powers.' Basis for the 2015 BBC mini-series which we enjoyed but thought the book was better. Recently listed by Neil Gaiman as one of his ten favourite books.; Highly recommended. 'The drawing room social comedies of early 19th-century Britain are infused with the powerful forces of English folklore and fantasy in this extraordinary novel of two magicians who attempt to restore English magic in the age of Napoleon. In Clarke's world, gentlemen scholars pore over the magical history of England, which is dominated by the Raven King, a human who mastered magic from the lands of faerie. The study is purely theoretical until Mr. Norrell, a reclusive, mistrustful bookworm, reveals that he is capable of producing magic and becomes the toast of London society, while an impetuous young aristocrat named Jonathan Strange tumbles into the practice, too, and finds himself quickly mastering it. Though irritated by the reticent Norrell, Strange becomes the magician's first pupil, and the British government is soon using their skills. Mr. Strange serves under Wellington in the Napoleonic Wars (in a series of wonderful historical scenes), but afterward the younger magician finds himself unable to accept Norrell's restrictive views of magic's proper place and sets out to create a new age of magic by himself.' 46 6289 COOK, William (Editor) Goodbye Again : The Definitive Peter Cook and Dudley Moore
Hardcover Century: London; 2004; First British Edition 389 pages Very Good+ in Very Good+ dust wrapper
Spine ends bumped, a few smudges on page edges. Unclipped dust wrapper has very light edgewear. A very nice copy.; 'Peter Cook and Dudley Moore are still commonly regarded as the greatest comic double act that Great Britain has ever produced. Today it's impossible to imagine modern sketch shows without them. If you're a fan of Monty Python, The Comic Strip or The Fast Show, then you're a fan of Cook and Moore. This collection of their works is a comprehensive compilation of the finest sketches that Cook and Moore ever wrote together - from the beginning of their partnership, in the groundbreaking stage show, Beyond The Fringe, to the notorious taboo busting Derek and Clive LPs that captured the spirit of punk rock, and inspired the scatological anarchy of Alternative Comedy. Featuring transcripts of one night stands long since almost forgotten, such as their Royal Variety performance, as well as a wealth of virtually unknown material, including previously unpublished scripts for "Not Only But Also", "Goodbye Again" promises to be a revelation, even for Cook and Moore's most informed fans. As well as illuminating their work, this book also promises to shed light on their intimate yet turbulent relationship.'

One of the great deceptions of World War II took place in April 1943 when a body wearing a Royal Marines uniform was found off the coast of Fascist Spain. With him was a courier's briefcase containing documents indicating that the Allies were about to invade Europe through Greece—a gambit dubbed "Operation Mincemeat" that the Nazis swallowed whole—while the real Allied objective was Sicily. Officially shrouded in secrecy, the story became the basis for this novel published in 1950 against the wishes of the British government.
