A Young Man's Fancy, PLEYDELL, Susan [Isabel Senior nee Syme]
1 6628 PLEYDELL, Susan [Isabel Senior nee Syme] A Young Man's Fancy
Softcover; Trade PB Greyladies: Edinburgh; c1959, 2011; 390 pages New
The spring term is always disaster-prone, but this one at Ledenham School surpasses itself. The Headmaster’s invaluable secretary collapses with appendicitis and has to be replaced by Oonagh – ‘Swooner’ to the boys; a young master’s fancy, lightly turning to thoughts of love, causes a major crisis at Governors’ level; the Headmaster’s daughter Alison’s romance is beset by unwelcome public scrutiny and comment.

We meet several of the characters from "Summer Term", decent chaps and the right sort of girls, plus a few outright cads to give added spice. Although a sequel it can be read on its own; we enjoyed this title more than "Summer Term".
; A new book with very faint soil to page edges.; Recommended by Geraldine H. of the DES email discussion group. This title reviewed and recommended by Claire author of 'The Captive Reader' blog.

Brighouse Hotel, PLEYDELL, Susan [Isabel Senior nee Syme]
2 7318 PLEYDELL, Susan [Isabel Senior nee Syme] Brighouse Hotel
Softcover; Trade PB Greyladies: Edinburgh; c1977, 2013; 272 pages New
Faint edgewear; a lovely copy.; When Clunie, homesick for the hills, returns to Glen Torran after four years in London, she finds a job as temporary receptionist at the Brighouse Hotel, the Mountain Rescue centre for the area and the meeting place, or ‘howf’, of the local and visiting climbing fraternity. She finds everyone exactly the same – only more so. No-one has forgotten that both Keith Finlay and Malcolm Graham, now climbing partners planning an expedition to the Hindu Kush, had been her boyfriends, or that she had always fought with Pat McKechnie, and speculation is rife. Pat McKechnie is also in "Glenvarroch Gathering". Some details from that book are in this book but it is not a sequel.; This author recommended by Claire author of 'The Captive Reader' blog. Edition is now out of print. Image is our last copy on offer.

Faint edgewear; a lovely copy.; The advertisement in The Times -“Glenvarroch. Scottish family with large house on West Highland sea loch welcomes paying guests for summer holidays” - attracted an oddly assorted group: a schoolboy, an American couple, a schoolmistress from the Midlands, a young man writing a novel and an exotic brother and sister from London. But after a while the charm of the visitors begins to pall, and the C.I.D. warn Professor McKechnie that his daughter Fiona may be in danger.; This title reviewed and recommended by Claire author of 'The Captive Reader' blog and by The Desperate Reader on her blog. Summer Term, PLEYDELL, Susan [Isabel Senior nee Syme]
5 7336 PLEYDELL, Susan [Isabel Senior nee Syme] Summer Term
Softcover; Trade PB Greyladies: Edinburgh; c1959, 2010; 288 pages Very Good
When Clare Fielding, the headmaster's daughter, took her mother's place at Ledenham School for a term, she was looking forward to running the school and the house. But the arrival of her sophisticated cousin Frances and the subtle persecution of the raw new master, Angus, made the summer term at once more exciting and more difficult than she had expected.

Susan Pleydell was herself the wife of a public school headmaster and writes with authority, charm and skill in this her first novel, originally published in 1959.; Front cover lightly creased and scratched with a tiny hole, light soil to top textblock edge. ; Recommended by Geraldine H. of the DES email discussion group. This author recommended by Claire author of 'The Captive Reader' blog. This is our last copy of this out of print title. Image is actual copy on offer.
