A rather nice copy of a very funny book.; 'Throughout the 1990s Deric Longden has shared his life with a blind novelist, Aileen Armitage, and four cats: Thermal, Tigger, Frink and shabby old Arthur. And the cats have found that sharing a life with Aileen can be a very painful business. She hardly ever trips over them these days, but they are always in danger of being mistaken for a cardigan, or inadvertently locked in the cellar. Ever since Thermal came in from the cold, Deric has seen his world increasingly taken over by cats. What with planning their menus, entertaining their friends, listening to their worries and observing their adventures, he has little time left over for his professional life as a writer. But there are rich rewards. One way or another, the cats in the Longden household are an endless source of interest and laughter. Few writers have found so much enjoyment in the company of cats, and none has written better about their charm, and the fascinating range of their personalities. This book will enchant cat-lovers everywhere, and give Longden-lovers an unforgettable treat.'; All of this author's books are highly recommended; we don't know why they all aren't published in the US. We were deeply saddened to learn he died in June 2013. Image is actual copy on offer.

Dewey: The Small-Town Library Cat Who Touched the World, MYRON, Vicki and Bret Witter
20 6504 MYRON, Vicki and Bret Witter Dewey: The Small-Town Library Cat Who Touched the World
Hardcover Grand Central Publishing: NY; 2008; Seventh Printing 288 pages B&W Photographs: Very Good+ in Near Fine dust wrapper
Spine tail lightly bumped, top rear corner not completely covered by paper, revealing board (a publishering flaw). Unclipped dust wrapper in lovely condition. A very nice copy indeed. ; "How much of an impact can an animal have? How many lives can one cat touch? How is it possible for an abandoned kitten to transform a small library, save a classic American town, and eventually become famous around the world? You can't even begin to answer those questions until you read the charming story of Dewey Readmore Books, the beloved library cat of Spencer, Iowa.

Dewey's story starts in the worst possible way. Only a few weeks old, on the coldest night of the year, he was stuffed into the returned book slot at the Spencer Public Library. He was found the next morning by library director, Vicki Myron, a single mother. Dewey won her heart, and the hearts of the staff, by pulling himself up and hobbling on frostbitten feet to nudge each of them in a gesture of thanks and love. For the next nineteen years, he never stopped charming the people of Spencer with his enthusiasm, warmth, humility, (for a cat) and, above all, his sixth sense about who needed him most."

Gift of a Home, The, NICHOLS, Beverley
21 7191 NICHOLS, Beverley Gift of a Home, The
Hardcover Dodd, Mead & Co: NY; 1973; First US Edition 8vo ; 395 pages Illustrated by William McLaren; B&W Illustrations: Very Good+ in Very Good+ dust wrapper
Spine ends faintly bumped and faded, one top corner faintly bumped. Pages faintly age browned but clean. Unclipped dust wrapper has very lightly sunned spine and faint edgewear. A very nice copy indeed. ; This is a condensed version of the Merry Hall trilogy containing "Merry Hall", Laughter on the Stairs" and "Sunlight on the Lawn". They are Nichols' hilarious (but catty and often insulting to women) accounts of his tribulations in refurbishing a gracious, but run-down, Georgian house and garden.

"In the best tradition of P.G. Wodehouse and E.F. Benson, the author transforms the large and small happenings of a sleepy British village and country estate into mock high drama. Whether one is most interested in gardens, chandeliers, ghosts, cats, or bird song," his books are packed with endlessly quotable observations. As works of 'fictional' nonfiction, these are among the author's finest -and funniest - books.; This author recommended by Alison H. of the DES email discussion group, Kristi J. of the ATS, AT and DES email discussion groups and Patricia R. of the ATS and AT email discussion group. This first title in this omnibus is recommended and reviewed by Claire author of 'The Captive Reader' blog.Image is actual copy on offer.
