Elsie and Mairi Go to War : Two Extraordinary Women on the Western Front, ATKINSON, Diane
4 7217 ATKINSON, Diane Elsie and Mairi Go to War : Two Extraordinary Women on the Western Front
Softcover; Trade PB Pegasus Books: NY; 2010; Very Good+
An unread copy received with slight edgewear and light soil marks on top edge.; "When they met at a motorcycle club in 1912, Elsie Knocker was a thirty year-old motorcycling divorcee and Mairi Chisholm was a brilliant eighteen-year old mechanic, living at home borrowing tools from her brother. Theirs was to become one of the most extraordinary stories of the First World War.

In 1914, they roared off to London 'to do their bit', and within a month they were in the thick of things in Belgium driving ambulances to distant military hospitals. Frustrated by the number of men dying of shock in the back of their vehicles, they set up their own first-aid post on the front line in the village of Pervyse, near Ypres, risking their lives working under sniper fire and heavy bombardment for months at a time." ; ''Elsie, a trained nurse and midwife, and eighteen-year-old Mairi, formed part of an ambulance corps which went out to Belgium in the early days of the war; they became the only women to work permanently within shouting distance of the front line at their first aid post in the little Belgian town of Pervyse. Working independently, outside military organisations, their experience of the war was probably unique among women.''- Tanya I. author of the '20th Century Vox' blog. "This is a terrific book about two brave & determined women who made a great difference to so many wounded men under the most difficult circumstances."- This title reviewed and recommended by Lyn B., author of the 'I Prefer Reading' blog and member of the DES email discussion group. 5 6894 BAGGINI, Julian Welcome to Everytown : A Journey into the English Mind
Hardcover Granta Books: London; 2007; First British Edition 274 pages Near Fine in Near Fine dust wrapper
A new book with very faint edgewear to unclipped dust wrapper.; In an effort to find out what the English really think, the author spent six months in postal code S66, 'the most typical postcode area in the country'. He saw this area on the outskirts of Rotherham 'as England in microcosm - an area which reflected most accurately the full range of the nation's inhabitants, its most typical mix of urban and rural, old and young, married and single.' He immersed 'himself in this typical English Everytown, in order to get to know the mind of a people' and gives us a fascinating view of what he found.; 'What do the English think? Every country has a dominant set of beliefs and attitudes concerning everything from how to live a good life, how we should organize society, and the roles of the sexes. Baggini's account of the English is both a portrait of its people and a personal story about being an alien in your own land.' Published @ £14.99. Cover matches sample image.

Hardcover Random House: New York; 1998; First US Edition Near Fine in Very Good+ dust wrapper
304 pages; A new book. Dust wrapper has faint edgewear and rubbing.; Published in Great Britian as 'Voltaire's Coconuts or Anglomania in Europe'. In a blend of witty personal memoir and biographical portraits of European Anglophiles and Anglophobes, Buruma examines what it is that continues to divide Britain from the European Continent, and Europe from the United States.'; 'Voltaire saw Britain as an island of reason and liberty in a continent marked by violence and tyranny. Many Europeans-for example, Giuseppe Mazzini, Theodor Herzl, and André Malraux- admired the English gentleman. Others saw English parks as symbolic gardens of freedom and reproduced them all over Europe. German Romantics, including Goethe, regarded Shakespeare as a Nordic genius; Hitler made him an honorary German. Yet it was British- and by extension, American- liberalism that attracted many Continentals and appalled many others. Voltaire thought British free trade and political liberty went hand in hand; Karl Marx saw them as capitalist frauds. Typical Anglophobes, such as Kaiser Wilhelm II, regarded the English, the Americans, and the Jews as the most dangerous enemies of Europe. Half Dutch, half British, and from a family of Anglo-American Jews, Buruma is a loving, critical, and satirical observer of Europe's often-comical and sometimes- deadly prejudices.'

22 4735 DUNN, Jane Elizabeth and Mary : Cousins, Rivals, Queens
Softcover; Trade PB Knopf: NY; 2004; Uncorrected Proof Very Good
450 pages; This uncorrected proof copy does not have illustrations. Received and date stamp on top textblock edge, small spot on top edge, covers lightly edgeworn and rubbed, no spine creases. ; 'In a rich and riveting narrative, Jane Dunn reveals the extraordinary rivalry between the regal cousins. It is the story of two queens ruling on one island, each with a claim to the throne of England, each embodying dramatically opposing qualities of character, ideals of womanliness (and views of sexuality) and divinely ordained kingship.' ; 'As regnant queens in an overwhelmingly masculine world, they were deplored for their femaleness, compared unfavorably with each other and courted by the same men. By placing their dynamic and ever-changi ng relationship at the center of the book, Dunn illuminates their differences. Elizabeth, inheriting a weak, divided country coveted by all the Catholic monarchs of Europe, is revolutionary in her insistence on ruling alone and inspired in her use of celibacy as a political tool—yet also possessed of a deeply feeling nature. Mary is not the romantic victim of history but a courageous adventurer with a reckless heart and a magnetic influence over men and women alike. Vengeful against her enemies and the more ruthless of the two queens, she is untroubled by plotting Elizabeth’s murder. Elizabeth, however, is driven to anguish at finally having to sanction Mary’s death for treason. Working almost exclusively from contemporary letters and writings, Dunn explores their symbiotic, though never face-to-face, relationship and the power struggle that raged between them.'Published in hardback @ $30.00.
